Whiny (but very good) vocals, but like bands that can really set the mood for their musicĪnd are quite original, then Tool is for you! In conclusion, if you don't mind a few powerchords, drop D tuning, and I could care less if they tune in drop D and use a mountain of powerchords - infact, I like it! Hm, I wonder what the next Tool record will be like?Īnyway, Tool have one of the most distinct of atmospheres and a fantastic drummer. it's good that they are experimenting (although not as drastic of a Lateralus in ways, but I think Lateralus shows some improvements. To say whether this is a step up from Aenima is subjective. Progressive typicalness, but it still definitely has Tool's sound. On the other note, the music seems to be going for a more atmospheric Lot of emotions in its lyrics - but they're mainly about progression, or going from negative On this album Maynard dumps the straight-foward angst themes. Okay, so we have a lot Tool imitators out there. Come on, who else around here is doing that? Take murky metal with some progressive overtones and a dash ofĬreativity, and a VERY charismatic frontman. Tehnical and/or bluesy and whammified solos will turn off a ton of metal fans. While their heaviness will turn off a ton of 70s progressive rock fans, and the lack of It's arguable to whether they're progressive rock or not, as well. I gave it a 3-star rating (Good, but non-essential) because Aenima is one of the best progressive rock albums of the 90's along with Dream Theaters "Scenes From a Memory". Excelling over all the other tracks, this 13 minute epic sums up the whole album with its ever changing musical progress. "Third Eye" is what makes this album a masterpiece. "Aenima" is a brutal melee of angry guitar riffs that weaves in and out of mellow singing and angry screams. "Pu" is another lengthy piece but is one of the best songs on the album. "intermission" is a silly piece that is used to build up into the explosive "Jimmy" which has heavy droning guitars and brilliant, tortured vocals. Even though the lyrics tend to be a little crude, there is some rather excellent guitar work ere. It is very angry and the lyrics are an attack at the media because tool are very much against selling out. "Hooker with a Penis" is a very different song.
These tracks are ok but can get annoying. "Message To Harry Manback" is one of the short filler tracks to help link the 2 songs beside it together. "Forty Six & 2" is also a long winding piece that continues to build up brilliantly throughout and is one of the bands best songs. "Eulogy" is quite a long piece and can be hard to get into as it takes a while to build up but i think the lyrics (some say they refer to bill hicksīecause of the album artwork but others say they relate to jesus) are superbly writtenĪnd this song shows how tool can switch between emotion and angst. Maynards vocals are the key ingredient here. The album kicks off with "stinkfist" which shows off the bands guitar skills and progresses beautiful throughout.
Huge improvement on the bands amazing guitar skills. This album is much more accessible as it has excellent production and a
